Sinopsis:

Una nave espacial de la Tierra se estrella en un planeta desconocido. Según el calendario de a bordo, ha pasado un año y medio para los astronautas pero más de 2.000 años en la Tierra. La tripulación de la nave, comandada por el Coronel Taylor, escapa antes que la misma se hunda en las profundidas del lago donde amerizó. Los sobrevivientes inician una larga jornada a través de un vasto desierto, pero sus reservas son escasas. A última hora consiguen llegar a una selva donde descubren la existencia de otros seres humanos en estado muy primitivo - sin cultura ni lenguaje, y alimentándose de la naturaleza -. Pero pronto los astronautas descubren con horror que los humanos - y ellos - están siendo cazados por simios cabalgando a caballo, dotados de armas de fuego y redes. Taylor es apresado pero herido en el cuello. Cuando despierta, se encuentra en un laboratorio de los simios donde realizan investigaciones científicas a los humanos. Los hombres son considerados animales, seres inferiores, y utilizados en labores menores. Debido a su herida, Taylor le resulta imposible hablar, pero por fin consigue comunicarse con la doctora a cargo del laboratorio, la chimpancé Zira. El descubrimiento del humano parlante motiva una revolución en la cultura simia, donde el Dr. Zaius - un orangután - toma el hecho como una herejía y una amenaza a su civilización. Decidido a liquidarlo ya que es un peligro potencial, Taylor se verá forzado a escapar de los simios. Pero le espera un amargo descubrimiento sobre el planeta alienigena.

In the year 3978A.D. a spaceship with a crew of 4 crashes down on a distant planet. One of the crew members had died in space and the other 3 head out to explore the planet. They soon learn that the planet is much like their own. They then find the planet is inhabited by intelligent apes. One of the men is shot and killed and the others are taken to the apes' city. There, one undergoes brain surgery and is put into a state of living death. The other befriends some of the apes but is feared by most. After being put through ape trial he escapes with a female human native to the planet. After helping his ape friends escape a religious heresy trial he escapes out into the wilderness with the female. There he learns the planet might not be so distant after all...
